If you think of yourself as a problem or an outsider, you act like one. If you start seeing yourself as someone with a real job to do — a caretaker, a builder, a Trustee — your actions follow.

You can't get new results while telling yourself the same old story about who you are. The story has to change first. Then the actions change. Then the results change.

Forget "fake it till you make it." That teaches you to pretend. Instead: be it till you see it. Act like the person you are becoming. Know what you are working toward. Be honest about it. Take one step toward it today.

  Name your fear. What are you most worried about losing? Be specific. Be honest. That fear is your starting point. It points you in the right direction.

  Find where you need the most help right now. Is it staying safe? Belonging somewhere? Feeling capable? Contributing something? Leaving something behind? Start there.

  Ask one question. Pick one decision you are facing — about money, time, energy, or attention. Ask: What would a good caretaker do here? Do that one thing. Notice what changes.
